Alternative Monument: Migrating Memory

Workshop (in English and German as required)
This workshop opens the Alternative Monument as a living platform for exchange, experiment, and speaking out. It introduces the project’s different chapters, stops, and transformations, using them to think about presence and absence and everything that lags inbetween. Rooted in the urgent need to counter the toxic discourse on migration in Germany, the workshop frames migration as a force of connection rather than division. Together, we explore how artistic ideas survive restriction, lack of resources, and structural limits, and how monuments, gestures, and collective narratives can still be produced within and against institutional frames.
Movement sits at the core. Migration, dislocation, and displacement unfold as chosen or forced motions, driven by desire, survival, or necessity. Visible and invisible borders decide who moves freely and who must trespass. Through collective discussion and hands-on practice, participants explore movement as lived experience and political condition, asking what a monument to migration in public space can be today.
