Making a film that reflects the drama of children and teenagers from rural areas who migrated to Lima in search of better living conditions was, for me, an unavoidable commitment. At the end of the 20th century, in the 1990s, history was repeating itself. As these young women were illiterate, they had only one option: to work as domestic servants in the homes of families of different social classes, where, in most cases, they lived in conditions of semi-slavery, suffering all kinds of abuse and physical and psychological mistreatment.

Addressing this issue through fiction was a way to show and raise awareness in our society about this harsh and complex reality. The active participation of real “domestic workers” organised in an association enabled “domestic workers” from different latitudes and different generations to fully identify with our character and feel dignifiedly represented in Antuca, 35 years after its premiere. (Maria Barea)

The screening will be followed by a conversation with María Barea (in English).
