Performance (in English)
Recently, I’ve been witnessing an increasing presence of digestive problems in myself and others around me. From chronic illnesses to irregular pains, from organic symptoms to a broader feeling of being overwhelmed, it seems there is a lot we just can’t swallow. From food to images, we can say there is a general inflammatory syndrome of our times. This practice begins as a way to dedicate some time to digest and also to consider what digesting may be.
Vestibules is an invitation to a small group to lie down and close one’s eyes. Once the group is lying horizontally, with their eye vision turned off, I begin a vocal score guiding the group through images and sensations. Gradually, a “somatic fiction” begins to unveil. In the spaces between what is said and what is sensed, felt, imagined, thought and remembered, an unstable editing process unfolds within one’s body, in which images are processed and reprocessed much like in the digestive apparatus.
After the practice, there is time for a conversation in which impressions, sensations, thoughts, questions, memories and images are evoked. Whatever happened that triggered one’s attention might become a collective resource for processing these inner experiences and amplifying our digestive imperative.
The practice might generate a non-ordinary state of attention. It is a somatic experience that takes place within the sensorium of each person present. Consequently, it may affect one’s perception of time, space and gravity, but also the image we have of our body and its history. (Myriam Lefkowitz)
Content note:
The practice involves lying down with one’s eyes closed in the dark for around 45’. There is no direct contact with the performer. The entire performance is an experience of listening and processing. If anyone feels uncomfortable at any time, the person is free to leave the practice and will be accompanied to the exit.
