Berlin-based Palestinian director Kamal Aljafari recently discovered three MiniDV cassettes in his archive which document life in Gaza in 2001. This film material bears witness to a place and an era that no longer exist in the same way. What began as the search for a prison acquaintance from 1989 – a man who got lost in the turmoil of time – became an unexpected road trip from the north to the south of Gaza with Hasan, a local guide whose current fate is unknown. As the camera moves through the streets and landscapes of Gaza, it records fleeting moments of everyday life – fragments of a reality now irrevocably changed. With Hasan in Gaza transforms this forgotten material into a cinematic reflection on memory, loss and the course of time. Along the way, it captures a Gaza of the past and shows a life that is perhaps lost forever.
