Kusama’s Self-Obliteration

↳ Yayoi Kusama, Jud Yalkut

US 1967, 00:23:00

16mm

As filmmaker first and intermedia artist second, Yalkut […] is able to control not only the spatial and temporal dimensions of a performance, but the graphic composition and integrity of the images as well. The result is a “film performance” in the fullest sense. (Gene Youngblood, Expanded Cinema)

Red, green and yellow polka dots can be the circles representing the earth, the sun, or the moon. Their shapes and what they signify do not really matter. I paint polka dots on the bodies of people, and with those polka dots, the people will self-obliterate and return to the nature of the universe. (Yayoi Kusama, from her autobiography Infinity Nets)
