Phenomena, completed in 1965, moved Belson closer to the totally personal metaphysical experience that culminated two years later in Samadhi. Also Phenomena was the first film in which he abandoned allegories with space flight or astronomic subjects for a more Buddhistic exploration of psychic energies. It was primarily inspired by Buddha’s statements in the Diamond Sutra and the Heart Sutra. (Gene Youngblood, Expanded Cinema)
