UFOs

↳ Lillian Schwartz, Ken Knowlton

US 1971, 00:04:00

16mm

Lillian Schwartz’s work with Ken Knowlton does not appear in Expanded Cinema, as it began concurrent with the completion of the book in 1969-1970, though Knowlton’s pioneering work at Bell Labs is discussed in the book. We chose two films by Schwartz as examples of steps taken to explore this new technological and creative realm. “Our perception of a comfortable, complete moving image is associated with the alpha rhythm of our brains. The standard film speed of 24 frames per second minimizes any perception of flickering as the frames are shifted before the projector’s bulb.” – “UFOs maintained color saturation through a new scheme of film editing. Black frames were inserted every fourth frame to keep the viewer’s eyes refreshed.” (Lillian Schwartz & Laurens Schwartz, The Computer Artist’s Handbook)
