My goal with Enigma was to create an illusion of color in a black-and-white film, and I drew upon experiments Edwin H. Land had been performing at Polaroid. The timing in this film involved the speed of the dance among the rectangles. If the lines moved and intersected enough, an observer would start to perceive saturated colors between the lines.
